Go for Broke!

Directed by Robert Pirosh, Go for Broke! is a stirring war drama that sheds light on a frequently overlooked yet vital chapter of World War II history. The film stars Van Johnson as Lt. Michael Grayson, a prejudiced officer reluctantly assigned to command the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a unit composed entirely of Japanese-American volunteers (Nisei). What makes this production truly unique is that many of the soldiers on screen were played by actual veterans of the 442nd, lending an undeniable authenticity and emotional weight to the story.

The narrative traces Grayson’s transformation from a bigot to a believer as he witnesses the extraordinary courage, discipline, and patriotism of his men, even as their own families remain imprisoned in internment camps back home. This poignant script earned Pirosh an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay.
