Rain

Set against the relentless downpour of Pago Pago, Rain is a searing psychological drama that pushed the boundaries of Pre-Code cinema. Directed by the acclaimed Lewis Milestone, this 1932 adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham’s story stars a young Joan Crawford in one of her most controversial and defining roles. She plays Sadie Thompson, a spirited and unapologetic prostitute stranded on a South Sea island, whose presence disrupts the rigid moral order of the local missionaries. Her primary antagonist is the fanatical reformer Alfred Davidson, played with terrifying intensity by Walter Huston.

The film is a masterclass in tension, exploring the dangerous line between religious zealotry and repressed desire. Although it was considered a box office disappointment at the time and did not garner major Academy Awards, critics have since re-evaluated it as a bold, atmospheric masterpiece that was simply ahead of its time.
