My Man Godfrey

My Man Godfrey (1936) is often celebrated as one of the Best Old Movies of Hollywood’s Golden Age, blending sharp wit, social satire, and heartfelt comedy into a timeless cinematic experience. Directed by Gregory La Cava, the film stars William Powell as Godfrey, a mysteriously dignified homeless man, and Carole Lombard as Irene Bullock, an eccentric socialite who hires him as the family butler. This screwball classic has become a favorite among fans of Classic Cinema and Classic Films, and today it is widely available as one of the most beloved Public Domain Movies.

The story begins when Irene encounters Godfrey in a shantytown during a high-society scavenger hunt. Impressed by his intelligence and humility, she offers him the job of butler in the chaotic Bullock household. As Godfrey navigates the eccentricities of the wealthy family—ranging from Irene’s dramatic romantic gestures to her sister Cornelia’s jealousy—the film uses humor to expose the divide between privilege and poverty. This witty exploration of class conflict is one reason My Man Godfrey continues to be highlighted among Classic Films and appreciated by viewers who enjoy Public Domain Movies and Copyright-Free Movies.

As the narrative unfolds, Godfrey slowly brings order, dignity, and insight into the Bullock home, while Irene falls deeper into an enthusiastic, if unrequited, affection for him. William Powell delivers a flawless performance marked by restraint and charm, while Carole Lombard’s energetic comedic brilliance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. The film also received Oscar nominations for Best Actor, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Screenplay—making it the first film ever nominated in all four acting categories. This rich awards history places My Man Godfrey firmly within the ranking of Best Old Movies and Classic Cinema masterpieces.
