The Gorilla

Directed by the prolific Allan Dwan, The Gorilla is a raucous horror-comedy that perfectly captures the zany spirit of 1930s entertainment. The film stars the slapstick trio The Ritz Brothers—Harry, Al, and Jimmy—as bumbling detectives hired to protect a wealthy man threatened by a mysterious killer known only as "The Gorilla." Set in a classic "old dark house" during a stormy night, the movie balances frights with farce, featuring a stellar supporting cast that includes the legendary Bela Lugosi as a suspicious butler, Lionel Atwill, and the sharp-witted Patsy Kelly.

While The Gorilla didn't sweep the Academy Awards, it holds a special place in cinematic history as a beloved example of the "spooky house" mystery genre, parodying the very tropes that actors like Lugosi helped popularize. The Ritz Brothers’ chaotic energy drives the plot, offering a lighter alternative to the era's more serious creature features. It is this unique blend of mystery and vaudeville humor that makes modern audiences curious to Watch The Gorilla today.
