Häxan

Häxan (1922): The Intersection of History and Horror

Part documentary, part horror fantasy, and entirely unique, Häxan (1922) is one of the most provocative films of the silent era. Directed by Benjamin Christensen, this Swedish-Danish co-production explores the history of witchcraft from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. As a landmark in cinema history, it is celebrated for its surreal imagery, demonic portrayals, and its thesis that medieval "witchcraft" was often a misunderstanding of mental illness. As a standout in public domain movies, it remains a visually overwhelming experience that influenced everything from folk horror to modern avant-garde classic cinema.

The Story: From Medieval Cauldrons to Modern Hysteria

Häxan is divided into several chapters, beginning with an academic look at medieval cosmology before diving into dramatized vignettes of witch trials, devil worship, and inquisitions. This full feature film is famous for its elaborate depictions of "Sabbaths" and the director himself appearing as a terrifyingly charismatic Satan. For fans of history of cinema, the film is a masterclass in set design and makeup, featuring some of the most grotesque and imaginative practical effects of classic Hollywood’s contemporaries.

The film’s ultimate goal was to show that those persecuted as witches were often suffering from what 1920s science termed "hysteria." As a top rated movie for its bold artistic choices, it was banned in several countries upon release for its "blasphemous" and "obscene" content. Because it is a public domain film, it is an essential free movie for those who enjoy "Folk Horror" and films that challenge the boundaries between reality and the supernatural.

Production: Lighting, Shadows, and Silent Screams

The production of Häxan was the most expensive Scandinavian film of its time. Christensen spent years researching the Malleus Maleficarum and used intricate lighting to create a "Goya-esque" aesthetic. This classic Hollywood-adjacent masterpiece proved that silent films could be as intellectual as they were visceral. For those seeking old movies to watch that feel centuries ahead of their time, this full length movie free from copyright is a disturbing and beautiful journey into the history of cinema.
